How to plan a coastal weekend route

By the Velorina editors · Sep 29, 2026 · 6 min read

Wind, ferries, cafés and daylight: the four things that make or break a coastal ride, and how to plan around each of them.

Check the wind forecast first. Ride into the wind while you are fresh and let it carry you home.

Coastal roads often have gaps that only a ferry or a long inland detour can close. Note departure times and keep a backup plan.

Mark two or three cafés along the way and know their opening hours. In quieter seasons many close early.

Finally, count daylight hours and keep a buffer of at least an hour. Lights and a reflective layer belong in every saddle bag.
