Choosing your first gravel bike

Tyre clearance, gearing and fit matter far more than frame material. A buyer's checklist for new gravel riders.

Look for clearance for at least 40 mm tyres. Wider tyres at lower pressure give comfort and grip on loose surfaces.

Choose low gearing. A small chainring around 30 to 40 teeth with a wide-range cassette keeps steep, rough climbs rideable.

Get the fit right first. A slightly shorter reach and taller front end are more comfortable on long days off road.
